Nigeria has taken another major step towards its climate transition agenda with the unveiling of the Net Zero Investment Plan aimed at driving low-carbon development, climate resilience, and sustainable economic growth. The framework is expected to guide long-term investments, mobilise climate finance, and strengthen the country’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions in line with global climate goals and national development priorities.

The Federal Government, through the National Council on Climate Change, has unveiled Nigeria’s Net Zero Investment Plan (NZIP), a framework designed to support the country’s climate commitments and accelerate the transition towards a low-carbon economy.
The plan outlines Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) alongside existing climate and development strategies, particularly Agenda 2050, which serves as the country’s long-term economic and sustainability blueprint.

Speaking during the unveiling ceremony in Abuja, the Country Director of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Dr. Markus Wagner, described the initiative as a major step towards translating Nigeria’s climate ambitions into practical and bankable investment opportunities.
According to him, the NZIP will serve as a long-term roadmap for achieving net-zero emissions while strengthening sustainable economic growth and climate resilience.
Dr. Wagner explained that beyond setting emission reduction targets, the investment plan provides a structured framework capable of mobilising both public and private sector financing towards long-term low-carbon development.

He noted that achieving net-zero emissions would require strong collaboration among governments, development partners, financial institutions, and the private sector.
“The plan demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to aligning climate action with national development priorities while creating an enabling environment for investments,” he stated.
The GIZ Country Director further explained that the framework identifies priority investment sectors, outlines financing requirements, and proposes strategies for addressing existing climate finance gaps.
According to him, the initiative is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s contribution to global climate neutrality efforts while positioning the country as a competitive, knowledge-driven economy and a leading climate actor on the African continent in line with the African Union Agenda 2063.
He added that the NZIP was developed under the NDC Partnership’s “Global Call for NDCs 3.0 and Long-Term Low-Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS)” initiative.
The project also received technical support from GIZ and funding from the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety through the International Climate Initiative.
