As preparations for the 2026 farming season gather momentum, Deputy President of the Senate, Barau I. Jibrin, has unveiled a major agricultural support initiative aimed at boosting crop production and strengthening food security in Kano State. The intervention, which will see thousands of farmers and community stakeholders receive fertiliser across the Kano North Senatorial District, underscores growing efforts by political leaders to support local food systems amid rising concerns over agricultural productivity and economic pressures.
In what has been described as a strategic intervention to enhance agricultural productivity and improve food sufficiency, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has concluded arrangements for the distribution of 53,040 bags of fertiliser to farmers and stakeholders across the 13 Local Government Areas of Kano North Senatorial District.
The large-scale distribution, scheduled to be officially unveiled on Sunday, May 31, 2026, is expected to provide timely support to farmers ahead of the commencement of this year’s planting season. The initiative is part of Senator Barau’s annual agricultural intervention programme designed to ease access to essential farm inputs and encourage bumper harvests across the region.
According to a statement issued by the Senator’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Malam Ismail Mudashir, the intervention reflects Senator Barau’s sustained commitment to supporting rural farmers, strengthening agricultural value chains, and contributing meaningfully to national food security efforts.
The release noted that the fertiliser distribution goes beyond farmers alone, extending to a wide network of grassroots stakeholders who play vital roles within their communities and political structures. Beneficiaries include party stakeholders at different levels, elected chairmen, vice chairmen, councillors, and party secretaries.
Also listed among the beneficiaries are APC caucus members, imams, village heads, ward heads, headmasters, school principals, security personnel, and social media influencers, among others.
Observers say the broad scope of beneficiaries reflects an attempt to deepen community participation in agricultural development while also reinforcing grassroots mobilisation ahead of the farming season.
Senator Barau, while reiterating his commitment to programmes that directly improve the lives of his constituents, stressed the importance of early access to fertiliser and other agricultural inputs in achieving increased farm yields and sustainable food production.
He noted that the intervention aligns with the food security agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose administration has repeatedly emphasised agriculture as a critical pillar for economic recovery, job creation, and national stability.
The Deputy Senate President urged beneficiaries to make effective and judicious use of the fertiliser to ensure the intervention achieves its intended objectives of improving harvest output and supporting local food supply chains.
Agriculture remains one of the major economic activities across Kano State and northern Nigeria generally, with millions depending on farming for livelihood and income generation. Analysts believe that interventions targeted at improving farmers’ access to inputs such as fertiliser, seedlings, and mechanised support could significantly help reduce production challenges and strengthen food availability.
With the unveiling date now set, expectations are high among farming communities across Kano North that the fertiliser support will provide much-needed relief amid rising production costs and ongoing concerns over food inflation nationwide.
