As the rainy season farming cycle gathers momentum across Anambra State, the wife of the governor, Nonye Soludo, has intensified efforts to promote household gardening and subsistence agriculture among residents. Through her Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo initiative, the Anambra First Lady is encouraging families, especially women, to embrace small-scale farming as a pathway to healthier living, food sufficiency, and economic empowerment.
The wife of the Anambra State governor, Nonye Soludo, has distributed 5,000 packs of hybrid non-GMO seeds to residents across the state as part of efforts to strengthen household gardening and subsistence farming ahead of the planting season.
The distribution exercise was carried out through her non-governmental organisation, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, a platform dedicated to promoting healthy living, environmental sustainability, and food security among families and communities in the state.
Addressing women and residents during the exercise, Dr Soludo encouraged Ndi Anambra to take advantage of the farming season by cultivating home gardens capable of supporting family nutrition while also generating additional income through surplus produce.
According to a statement issued on Friday, the seed packs contain carefully selected varieties of crops including corn, green vegetables, cabbage, pepper, tomatoes, and okra, aimed at helping families grow healthy and organic food within their homes and communities.
The initiative, which commenced in 2024, has continued to gain momentum across the state. So far, over 25,000 seed packs have reportedly been distributed to residents and small-scale farmers, providing both nutritional support and economic relief for many households.
Speaking during the distribution, Dr Soludo stressed the importance of women’s participation in agriculture, noting that household gardening and subsistence farming remain critical tools for improving food availability and reducing pressure on family income.
She said, “As the annual rainy season farming begins, I am delighted to once again support and encourage passionate individuals in Anambra State who desire to own a household garden or embrace subsistence farming through the distribution of 5,000 packs of hybrid non-GMO seeds to passionate and interested individuals.”
She further urged residents to embrace sustainable farming practices capable of boosting local food production and positioning communities for greater agricultural productivity in the future.
Observers say the initiative aligns with growing nationwide calls for increased local food production and community-based agricultural practices as households seek practical ways to cushion rising food costs and strengthen food security.
