In a renewed push to spotlight the often-overlooked role of laboratory science in agricultural transformation, the Federal College of Agriculture, Moor Plantation, Ibadan, has marked its maiden World Laboratory Day with a strong call for increased investment in scientific infrastructure, training, and professional recognition.

Guardian online of 25th April, 2026 reports that the Federal College of Agriculture, Moor Plantation, Ibadan, has held its first-ever World Laboratory Day celebration, bringing together scientists, administrators, and stakeholders to underscore the central role of laboratory science in driving agricultural innovation and national development.

The event, organised by the Directorate of Technologists and Technical Staff (DITTECS) and held at the College Lecture Theatre, carried the theme: “A Day in the Laboratory: From Soil to Harvest.”

It provided a platform for reflection on how laboratory processes underpin agricultural productivity, from soil testing and research to improved crop yields and food security.
Representing the Provost, Prof. Jonathan Atungwu, the Deputy Provost (Academics), Dr. Victoria Okpeze, commended laboratory technologists for their vital contributions to agricultural research, particularly in soil analysis and productivity enhancement.
She described their work as fundamental to the institution’s research output and broader agricultural development efforts.
In her welcome address, the Director of DITTECS, Mrs. Abimbola Ala, described the celebration as a landmark initiative for the institution, noting that it aligns with global recognition of laboratory professionals.
“Laboratories remain central to advancements in science, agriculture, healthcare, and national development,” she said, urging increased investment in modern equipment, capacity building, and professional recognition.
She further stressed that laboratory practice forms the backbone of agricultural progress, calling on stakeholders to uphold standards and embrace innovation.
Delivering a goodwill message, Dr. Chidi Okpeze, representing the Provost of the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology, highlighted the indispensable role of laboratory science in sustaining plant, animal, and human life.
The Association of Science Laboratory Technologists of Nigeria also called for improved investment in laboratory infrastructure and training to boost food security and national development.
Guest lecturer, Dr. Kate Nwokocha of the University of Ibadan, described the laboratory as the “invisible backbone” of agriculture, noting that modern farming decisions are increasingly guided by scientific data generated in laboratories.
“Agriculture does not begin on the farm but in the laboratory,” she said, advocating structured training programmes to strengthen the capacity of laboratory personnel.
She also encouraged students to acquire practical laboratory skills while urging farmers to embrace soil testing services to improve productivity.
Other speakers, including deans from various schools within the college, commended the initiative and called for its continuity, describing it as a valuable platform for collaboration and professional development.
The event featured lectures, interactive discussions, and goodwill messages, concluding with a renewed commitment to strengthening laboratory systems as a foundation for agricultural transformation.
