Taxation is a vital source of revenue for governments worldwide. With a history dating back centuries, taxation enables governments to provide essential social amenities, fund security services, and support critical personnel. No government can function without taxation, as it allows them to fulfill obligations to citizens.
By paying taxes, citizens empower governments to deliver vital services, ensure adequate security, and meet their responsibilities to the public.
Nigeria operates a decentralized system in which the various levels of government are responsible for the taxes within their jurisdiction. They also employ the progressive tax system where an individual with a higher income pays higher taxes.
Tax Administration in Nigeria:
The body constitutionally saddled with tax administration in Nigeria is the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
The Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, 2025. The Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, 2025 (the Act) has rebranded the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) as the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS or the Service) as a centralised body for tax administration in Nigeria.
On 26 June 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the four (4) Tax Reform Bills into law. These laws include the Nigeria Tax Act (NTA), The Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA), The Nigeria Revenue Service Act (NRSA) and the Joint Revenue Board Act (JRBA), collectively referred to as “the Acts” hereafter). The Acts comprehensively overhaul the Nigerian tax landscape to drive economic growth, increase revenue generation, improve the business environment and enhance effective tax administration across the different levels of government.
