In a strategic effort to tackle youth unemployment and deepen agricultural participation, the Ondo State Government is investing in practical, income-generating agribusiness schemes—positioning poultry farming as a viable pathway to economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods.
The Ondo State Government has trained and empowered no fewer than 90 youths and women in modern poultry farming under its flagship Adiye Irorun Programme, a key component of its broader agribusiness development strategy.
The initiative, aligned with the ‘OUR EASE’ policy framework of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, is designed to create employment opportunities, enhance food production, and lift vulnerable groups out of poverty through sustainable agricultural practices.
Chairman of the Ondo State Agribusiness Empowerment Centre, Rotimi Wemimo Akinsola, disclosed in a statement that the programme operates across the state’s three senatorial districts, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for participants.
According to him, the Adiye Irorun Programme adopts a structured six-week training model, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on practical experience in poultry production. Beneficiaries are supported with essential inputs such as day-old chicks, feed, medication, and technical guidance throughout the cycle.
Akinsola revealed that 50 participants benefited in the first cycle, receiving a total disbursement of ₦8.5 million, while 40 participants in the second cycle are set to receive over ₦15 million. He noted that the initiative goes beyond training, offering participants a sustainable income model.
Under the programme, birds raised during each cycle are sold at maturity, with the government recouping production costs while profits are shared among participants—ensuring both skill acquisition and immediate financial returns.
“This model guarantees sustainability while directly empowering beneficiaries with income and practical expertise,” Akinsola stated.
He further explained that the Ondo North centre, located at Isuada ABC Farm, has successfully completed its second cycle, while the Ondo South centre in Ore has concluded its first cycle and commenced the second. The Ondo Central centre is expected to begin operations soon.
The initiative underscores the state government’s commitment to leveraging agriculture as a tool for economic growth, job creation, and social development.
